The stream of conscious narrative is used throughout the book The Thief and The Dogs to characterize the main character Said Mahran. This is done through the use of Said inner thoughts being stated in various situations. It is used to characterize Said in those situations which are most likely heavily impactful or distressing. An example of conscious narrative being used to depict Said's mental state in a time of distress is in Chapter 4 where Said's thoughts are being shown saying "The other Rauf Ilwan has gone, disappeared, like yesterday, like the first day in the history if man - like Nabawiyya's love or Ilish's loyalty. This inner though narration shows that Said is deeply bitter towards all of the characters mentioned in this. This characterizes Said as an unforgiving and angry man. The use of comparing his rival and his ex wife, whom both betrayed him, is Said's way of deciding that the change he is seeing in his old mentor, Rauf, is a betrayal to Said and everything within their past relationship. This continues to characterize Said with the Robinhood type attitude to wealth and stealing because of his childhood and past experiences. With a textual standpoint, the hyphen use is there to separate the passing and changing of time with betrayal as Said starts by thinking that time and new experiences has changed Rauf but then he goes to thinking that these changes occurring is a betrayal to him. The hyphen is a slight change in Said's thoughts showing his change in reaction to the situation. The reoccurring statements on wealth being revealed using the thoughts of the character and not explicit statements are not only characterization of the character but also Mahfouz's personal thoughts on the situation. He is expressing them through the angered thoughts of a thieving character to express his thoughts on wealth in a time of conflict and poverty without being attacked for them.
